Belonging, Bordering and Citizenship
This panel will unpick the concept of “citizenship” and ask how socialists might relate to it. We’ll be exploring the discourse of ‘active citizenry’ and its renewed prevalence following the Kruger report and outline its exclusionary and racialising effects, from Shamima Begum to Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, Jagtar Singh Johal to Windrush. What will it take to disinvest from the category of the citizen, and what does it mean to be anti-nationalist today?
