Labour and the Carceral State
With the former head of the Crown Prosecution Service leading the Labour Party, we’ll ask how the Left should respond. This panel will explore the legacy of the Labour Party’s relationship to the repressive apparatus of the Carceral State - from Blair’s indefinite detention of terror suspects to Corbyn’s ‘more Bobbies on the beat’ rhetoric - and ask: how must the left respond to current Labour discourse around being ‘tough on crime’? What’s the appropriate position to take now that Britain’s former ‘top cop’ is leading the Labour Party? And what would it even mean for the Left to be in charge of the military or intelligence services?
