The Covid-19 pandemic has laid bare the extent of poverty and inequality in our society, as well as the inadequacies of our welfare system to act as a safety net for people. The ending of furlough and the Universal Credit top-up in September will result in many more people experiencing hardship and poverty. Over the last few years, there has been growing support for a universal basic income (UBI) as a means to pave the way for a fairer long-term solution to the current broken system. This session will explore UBI and the question of how you turn a potentially transformative idea into practice, with a particular focus on the recent pilot in Wales.
